Welcome GOZONE Debaters new and experienced
We are “a tower of strength within and without” as we approach our first
debates of 2012.
Three tips for your first debate of the year.
#1 Finish planning and writing it NOW. Be sure you explain your arguments completely and have evidence for every one. You can use news items, interviews, research from the internet, articles in books, information from television shows like Behind the News.
#2 Create your palm cards Some students write out their whole debate on palm cards the first time. If you feel you know what you want to say- try using key words for each part of your debate. Put the key ideas for each part of your debate on 1 palm card.
If you’ve used the computer to write your debate, look in the drop down choices under format for “columns”. Select 2 columns. Your whole debate will now go into 2 separate columns. Find the end of each section and put in some spaces to create short sections which fit on 1 palm card.
Use coloured pens, textas or highlighters to show the words you want to emphasise. Add a picture to help you remember- the mind loves variety.
#3 Rehearse alone, rehearse with your team and IMPROVE
Don’t be afraid to take suggestions, make changes, add emphasis to sound more powerful. A debate is meant to be perfected!! PLAN IDEAS FOR REBUTTAL
